영국의 물리학자, 제임스 클러크 맥스웰

뉴턴은 눈에 보이는 세계의 물리법칙을 정리하였고, 맥스웰은 눈에 보이지 않는 세계의 물리법칙을 정리했습니다. 

아인슈타인은 이 두가지를 통합하였다.


오늘은 전자기학시간에 많은 공대생들을 괴롭혔던 맥스웰 방정식의 주인공, 제임스 클러크 맥스웰씨에 대해 알아보고자 합니다. 



영국의 물리학자 - 제임스 클러크 맥스웰


제임스 클러크 맥스웰(James Clerk Maxwell, FRS, 1831년 6월 13일 ~ 1879년 11월 5일)은 스코틀랜드의 에든버러에서 태어난 영국의 이론물리학자이자 수학자이다. 


그의 가장 중요한 성과는 전기 및 자기 현상에 대한 통일적 기초를 마련한 것이다. 전기와 자기를 단일한 힘으로 통합해 뉴턴 역학과 함께 과학 발전의 초석이 되었다. 맥스웰의 전자기학의 확립은 19세기 물리학이 이룩한 성과로 높게 평가받고 있다. 수학에 뛰어났던 그가 기존에 존재했던 패러데이의 유도 법칙, 쿨롱의 법칙 등 전자기 이론을 수식적으로 정리하여 나타낸 식이 ‘맥스웰 방정식’ 이다. 이 방정식은 전자기학의 기초가 되는 미분 방정식으로 이는 볼츠만의 통계역학과 함께 19세기 물리학이 이룬 큰 성과로 높이 평가받고 있다.

<맥스웰 방정식>



- 가우스 법칙, 쿨롱의 법칙을 일반화 한 식



- 가우스 자기법칙, 임의의 폐곡면을 통과하는 자기 선속이 0임을 의미하며, 이에 따라 N극 또는 S극이 따로 존재하는 이른바 자기 홀극은 존재하지 않는다. 



- 패러데이의 유도 법칙, 자속 밀도의 시간에 따른 변화는 자기장을 생성한다는 내용



- 앙페르 회로 법칙, 변위전류에 의해 수정된 식. 맥스웰은 에테르에 대한 가정으로 변위 전류에 대한 개념에 도달.

Famous oral presentation: “Dynamical theory of the electromagnetic field” presented to Royal Society containing ‘Maxwell’s Equations’ states “.. that it seems we have strong reason to conclude that light itself (including radiant heat and other radiations if any) is an electromagnetic disturbance in the form of waves propagated ……according to the electromagnetic laws”
