Earlier in 2015, we were convinced that Apple would be updating its MacBook Air to give it a Retina display like the one found in the Retina MacBook Pro models. Apple did indeed update its MacBook Air in March 2015, but it didn't get the Retina display. Instead, Apple launched a brand-new MacBook line that's super-thin, super-light and does offer that high-resolution display. But does that mean Apple won't enhance the MacBook Air with a Retina display in the future? We investigate in our 2016 MacBook Air release date, specs & features rumour round-up.

The latest rumours suggest that new 13in and 15in MacBook Air models are in the pipeline for spring or summer 2016, with the 11in MacBook Air being discontinued, read on for more information.

We had originally expected a new MacBook Air with Retina display to launch on 9 March 2015 at Apple's Spring Forward event. Instead a new Retina MacBook launched with a 12in display, introducing (or resurrecting) a new line for Apple's MacBook range. At the time Apple's MacBook Air also got an update, with new, faster processors, faster flash storage and better graphics, but the screen and overall design remained the same.

That left us wondering what Apple's plans are for the future of its MacBook line-up. It's quite possible that it intends to replace the MacBook Air with the new MacBook eventually, but it's equally possible that the MacBook Air will remain part of the line-up for some time yet, and could still get an upgrade to the Retina display when it is refreshed next year.

애플의 노트북을 통칭할때도 쓰이지만 세부 카테고리에도 맥북이란 녀석이 있어서 좀 헷갈리실거에요 ㅎㅎ 또한 각각 맥북에어, 맥북프로, 맥북에는 화면의 크기별로 몇가지 다른 종류의 맥북이 있습니다.ㅎ

 

애플의 데스크톱은 아이맥이라고 하구요.

조그마한 박스형태로 작은 본체만 제공되는 형태가 맥미니라고 합니다.

 

그리고 마지막으로 전문가들이 사용하는 고사양의 맥프로가 있습니다.

 

맥북프로와 맥프로는 다른 녀석이니 헷갈리시면 안됩니다.

If Apple does give the MacBook Air a Retina refresh, then it's likely we'll see the new 11in and 13in laptops in the spring of 2016. New MacBook Air models arrived in April of 2014, and in March of 2015.

만약 해플이 맥북에어를 레티나 버전으로 제공할 예정이라면, 우리는 2016년 봄에 새로운 11인치 13인치 랩톱을 보실수 있을 겁니다. 새로운 맥북에어 모델들은 2014년 4월, 2015년 3월에 출시되었었습니다.

 

In late November 2015, a report from the Economic Daily News suggests that the MacBook Air will see a significant update in 2016. However, the report suggest that the update to the MacBook Air may not arrive until WWDC in June, which will be more than a year after Apple last updated the MacBook Air. According to the report, the new MacBook Air models are expected to come out in the third quarter of next year, which suggests that there may be a wait after the June unveiling.

The Economic Daily News report notes that it’s been eight years since the MacBook Air launched and it’s not been redesigned in that time, suggesting that time is ripe for a makeover.

Some reports in mid 2015 suggested that the new MacBook Air could arrive as early as December, alongside a new MacBook Pro, but we're taking that rumour with a pinch of salt.

2015년 중반기 어떤 보고서에 따르면, 새로운 맥북에어는 2015년 12월달쯤 맥북프로와 함께 나올거라고 얘기했었는데요. 우리는 이러한 루머들은 가려들을 필요가 있습니다. 실제로 출시되지 않은걸로 보아 정말 그냥 루머였네요.

The last time that there was a Mac laptop that had more advanced specs than a more expensive model was the old MacBooks (aluminium, then white and black, and then eventually aluminum again). These older MacBook models were eventually discontinued and the price of the MacBook Air was reduced to make it the new entry level (when the MacBook Air initially launched it was quite overpriced for the specs, just like the current Retina MacBook).

더 비싼 모델보다 더 향상된 스펙을 가진 맥의 랩톱은 지난 old 맥북입니다.

It seems likely that the same will happen with the new MacBook models eventually replacing the MacBook Airs, at a lower price, but for now that seems a long way off.

결국 저가모델에 있어서 뉴맥북 모델은 맥북에어를 대체할 것으로 보입니다. 그러나 현재로써는 조금 시간이 더 걸릴 것 같습니다.

 

The Economic Daily News report suggests the new MacBook Air will cost more than it does currently when it does launch. The 11in MacBook Air starts at £749, while the entry level 13in model costs £849.

이코노믹 데일리 뉴스는 새로운 맥북에어가 출시되게 되면 그 가격이 더 높아질 것이라고 말했습니다. 11인치 맥북 에어는 749 파운드에서 시작하고, 입문자용 13인치 모델은 849파운드 정도로 말이죠.

 

If the 11in MacBook Air is removed from the line up perhaps the cost of entry of the 13in model will reduce to the level that the 11in model is currently, with a rumoured 15in model coming in at a higher price.

만약 11인치 맥북에어가 라인업에서 제거된다면, 13인치 모델의 비용은 현재의 11인치 모델 수준으로 낮아질것 입니다. 15인치 모델은 가격이 더 상승할 것이라는 루머가 있습니다.

As mentioned above, rumours suggest that the 11in MacBook Air will be discontinued, after all, the 11in MacBook Air is both smaller than the MacBook and the new iPad Pro.

위에서 언급한 것처럼 11인치 맥북은 단종될거라는 루머들이 있구요. 어쨌든, 11인치 맥북에어는 맥국과 새로운 아이패드 프로보다 작습니다.

 

However, 9to5 Mac points out, the new 13in and 15in MacBook Air models could be additional sizes to the MacBook range. That site predicts that some time in 2016/2017 we will have just two ranges of Mac laptops: the MacBook at the ultraportable level, and the more advanced MacBook Pro. Maybe the 17in MacBook Pro will make a comeback too, with a 4K display.

그러나, 9to5 Mac 은 새로운 13인치, 15인치 맥북에어 모델은 맥북 범위에 있어 추가적인 사이즈가 될 수 있다고 지적했습니다. (무슨말이죠?ㅠ? 저 잘하고 있는건가요? ㅠ)

These new MacBook Air models are said to be thinner and lighter, with internal spec enhancements. Apparently, the new MacBook Air will feature new batteries, cooling modules, and chassis, according to the Economic Daily News.

이러한 새로운 맥북에어는 내부적인 스펙 향상과 함께, 더 얇고 더 가벼워 질거라고 이야기 되어지고 있습니다. 듣자하니, 이코노믹 데일리 뉴스에 따르면 새로운 맥북에어는 새로운 배터리와 냉각 모듈과 섀시를 포함하게 될 것이라고합니다.

 

We also expect to see USB Type-C across the range, especially now that Intel has integrated Thunderbolt 3 into USB-C.

물론 우리는 USB Type-C를 보게될 것입니다. 특별히 현재 인텔은 썬더볼트 3을 USB-C에 집적중에 있습니다.

 

The next-generation MacBook Air is also likely to feature Intel Skylake processors, as well as graphics and RAM upgrades.

The suggestion that the MacBook Air will feature a Retina display has been long running but those rumours were prior to the launch of the 12in Retina MacBook and the iPad Pro - suggesting the signtings of the Retina display some thought was destined for the MacBook Air was instead for these models.

맥북에어가 레티나 디스플레이를 탑재할 것이라는 이야기는 아주 오래전부터 나왔었는데요. 이러한 루머는 12인치 레티나 맥북과 아이패드 프로보다 앞서 이야기가 되었었습니다.

맥북에어에 대해 레티나 디스플레이에 대한 시사는 다른 모델을 대신할 운명이었습니다.?

Does this mean that there will be no Retina display on the new MacBook Air when (or if) it launches. If Apple wants to keep the price down maybe not. Or perhaps the newly rumoured 15in Macbook Air will feature a Retina display, while the 13in model will lack the high res display, but come in at a lower price, one similar to the current price of the 11in MacBook Air.

Touch ID is the fingerprint sensor that's built-in to the Home button of the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It's also used to make Apple Pay more secure.

터치ID 는 아이폰5S, 아이폰6, 아이폰6 플러스에 내장되어있는 지문 인식 센서입니다. 이는 애플페이의 보안기능을 더해주기 위해 사용되지요.

 

According to an Independent report, Touch ID for the Mac line would require a dedicated chip to be built in to the device.

보고에 따르면, 맥라인을 위한 터치 ID 라인은 장치안에 내장될 수 있는 전용 칩이 필요하다고 합니다.

 

The rumour started with Taiwanese blog AppleCorner, which cited sources in the supply chain. Apparently the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad may get a biometric update too, enabling users to make Apple Pay payments on the web, but both those accessories were updated alongside the launch of a new 4K iMac so that seems unlikely to happen any time soon.

With the advent of the 12in MacBook and the new 12.9in iPad Pro the rumoured discontinuation of the 11in MacBook Air is no real surprise, given that its screen is smaller than both of these devices. The iPad Pro may indeed be viewed by Apple as a replacement for the 11in MacBook Air if Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments to the Telegraph are taken into account (published on 1 December 2015).

Following the launch of the iPad Pro, Cook told the Telegraph: “I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?”

It may not just be the 11in MacBook Air that is discontinued. When the new MacBook launched on 9 March 2015, analysts began to suspect that the MacBook Air might not be around for much longer. "This wasn't the MacBook Air, but instead leaped past the Air," said Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research. "They kept the MacBook Air around just as they do with older iPhones, but the MacBook is now in the same position as the newest iPhone. That makes me wonder if the Air will go away over time."

"And it's to Apple's benefit not to have so many 'families' of Macs."
